The United States immigration visa system opens doors to a world of opportunities and understanding the most commonly pursued visa types is the key to unlocking those possibilities. Whether you are dreaming of a new career journey, a world-class education, a reunion with loved ones, or an exhilarating adventure, there is likely a visa that is suitable for your goals and needs.
Primary Paths for Immigration to the U.S
U.S. immigration has two main types of visas for those dreaming of entering the U.S. legally and those types are:
- Immigrant Visa: This particular type is for individuals who desire to permanently move to the U.S. whether it is to join their family, start a career path, or for other reasons. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is the agency that handles the application processes
- Non-immigrant Visa: These are the visas that are commonly used for study, work, business, and tourism. The length of stay and paperwork involved varies a lot, especially for the H-1B, F1-Student visa and Tourist visa
Family-Based Immigration Visa Applications
Reunification of families remains a cornerstone of U.S. immigration, attracting a significant portion of immigrants each year. This pathway allows US citizens and lawful permanent residents to sponsor eligible family members for a lawful permanent resident status.
Here is why family-based visas are a top choice:
- Family unity is a high priority for U.S immigration
- Such programs are designed to cater to various family relationships, including spouses, parents, unmarried children under 21 years of age, and even siblings in certain situations
- Lawful Permanent Residents can enjoy countless benefits which include the opportunity to live, work, and then apply for U.S. citizenship
Employment-Based Immigration Visas
The U.S. economy is heavily dependent on skilled workers and employment-based immigration applications are key strategies for attracting and keeping the employed. Through employer-sponsored employment, foreigners are authorized to migrate to the U.S. and obtain lawful permanent residence status.
Here is why this is a top pick:
- Companies can sponsor foreign workers to fill crucial positions where qualified U.S. citizens are scarce
- U.S. employers can have access to a wider talent pool, while skilled immigrants can contribute their expertise and pursue career goals in the country
- This program offers its services to a wide variety of professions, from high-tech specialists (like engineers and programmers) to researchers and persons with extraordinary abilities in their fields
It is important to take into account to remember that navigating the application process can be complex, often involving labor certifications and meeting specific requirements. However, for qualified professionals, this path offers a valuable opportunity to build a successful career in the U.S.
H-1B Work Permits
H-1B Work Visas are designed for both foreign workers and U.S. businesses and it covers:
- Foreigners with specialty occupations that require a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and high levels of expertise such as engineers, scientists, and IT specialists
- Companies who can support the H-1B program to fill pivotal positions with qualified foreign workers, especially in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
- Three years of work authorization and an extension, however obtaining an H-1B visa does not automatically result in obtaining lawful permanent residency
This visa is commonly sought after because it:
- Benefits businesses and workers
- The process is streamlined (compared to lawful permanent residency). Acquiring an H-1B visa can be a faster option for companies to secure skilled workers compared to the longer application process for a U.S. green card
It is important to consider that the H-1B visa program has a capped number of visas granted annually making the competition more fierce.
Student Visas
F-1 Student visas are a popular stepping stone for international students seeking higher education in the U.S. and have the potential for a future career in the country. Thousands of students apply to get a better education in the U.S. as it boasts some of the most prestigious universities and colleges offering individuals a chance to learn from leading academics and obtain higher qualifications.

Visitor Visas
Tourist visas are also known as visitor visas however they are not a direct path to lawful permanent residence. While it is one of the most sought visas for many visitors it can be a stepping stone for future opportunities and here is why:
- Visitor visas allow people to experience American culture firsthand, visit with family or friends, or attend conferences and business meetings
- It also offers an opportunity to network with potential employers or academic institutions which could be essential for future immigration pursuits
